Parliament View, London
Chosen as the location for Woody Allen’s movie of the same name Parliament View is a development of super luxury apartments on the South side of the River Thames adjacent Lambeth Palace, and opposite the Houses of Parliament which sits diagonally opposite on the North side of the river.
The proximity to Lambeth Palace limited the available height to the East. The 60’s tower in terracotta, allowed greater height to the West, hence the rising form.
The characteristic curve however, derived from the triangular shaped site. We rejected a triangular shaped plan as this would have blocked the view of Parliament. Instead, we eliminated the whole wing adjacent the roundabout and pushed all the apartments to the rear of the site.
The curve resulted from easing the plan form to ensure the maximum number of apartments had a direct line of sight to Parliament.
